Detroit Future City

Detroit Future City Waterfront
This competition entry reimagines Detroit's riverfront as a catalyst for urban regeneration and community building. The Detroit Future City – Waterfront District project addresses the unique challenges of post-industrial waterfront development while celebrating the city's history and potential for renewal.
The design strategy focuses on creating connections between the city and the Detroit River, transforming underutilized industrial sites into mixed-use neighborhoods that combine residential, commercial, and cultural programming. This approach aims to attract residents while serving existing communities.
Public spaces along the riverfront are designed to accommodate diverse activities—from daily recreation to large-scale events. The design includes parks, performance venues, markets, and educational facilities that create year-round attractions for both residents and visitors.
The project integrates economic development strategies that support local entrepreneurship and job creation. Mixed-use development, innovation districts, and cultural industries are woven together to create a sustainable economic ecosystem that builds on Detroit's existing strengths.
Environmental sustainability and climate resilience are central to the design, with green infrastructure systems that manage stormwater, improve air quality, and create habitat corridors. These systems demonstrate how urban development can enhance rather than degrade environmental conditions.
